Introducing Fraction · Decimal · Millimetre — A Visual Workshop Converter
A free interactive web tool for quickly converting between fractional inches, decimal inches, and millimetres using a visual ruler graduated to 1/64 inch.
Introducing Fraction · Decimal · Millimetre
I have released a new browser-based tool designed to make workshop measurements easier to understand and convert.
Fraction · Decimal · Millimetre is an interactive converter that keeps fractional inches, decimal inches, and millimetres synchronized on a single visual ruler.
Whether you are working from a woodworking plan, checking a measurement with digital calipers, or converting between imperial and metric dimensions, the tool provides a quick and visual way to see how the measurements relate.
Three Measurements, Always in Sync
Enter a value as:
- A fraction, such as
3/8" - A decimal, such as
0.375" - A metric measurement, such as
9.525 mm
The other measurement formats update automatically.
This makes it easier to move between measurements from plans, tape measures, rulers, calipers, and digital design software without repeatedly calculating each conversion.
A Live 1/64-Inch Ruler
The converter is built around an interactive ruler graduated to 1/64 of an inch.
You can:
- Type measurements directly into the converter
- Drag the measurement indicator along the ruler
- Use the plus and minus controls to step through measurements
- Compare imperial fractions directly with millimetres
- See decimal-inch values update instantly
The visual ruler helps make the relationship between each measurement system easier to understand, rather than presenting the conversion as numbers alone.
Accurate Measurement Snapping
Measurements that do not land exactly on a 1/64-inch division are snapped to the nearest available fraction.
The tool also reports how far the original measurement differs from the snapped value in:
- Inches
- Millimetres
- Thousandths of an inch
This is especially useful when deciding whether a converted measurement is close enough for a workshop project or whether greater precision is required.
Designed for Makers and Students
The tool is useful for anyone who regularly moves between imperial and metric measurements, including:
- Woodworkers
- Furniture builders
- Machinists and fabricators
- Students
- Hobbyists
- Designers working from technical drawings
- Makers using both traditional and digital measuring tools
It can also help students build a stronger understanding of how common inch fractions relate to decimal values and metric measurements.
Use the Tool
The converter runs directly in your web browser and does not require an installation.
